[Triscape] is a competition entry for Reinventing the Beijing Baitasi courtyards. "Baitasi is a key historical area in Beijing's urban core; its history can be traced back to the Yuan dynasty. The area has well preserved the stylistic fabrics of the Hutong from that era. ... By renovating the traditional courtyard spaces, the Batasi project attempts to recreate the courtyards’ various possibilities of spatial and functional recombination—to revive thespaces, to make different functions coexist." - Beijing Huarong Jinying Investment & Development Co. Ltd.
Different from those large formal courtyard houses, the low-rise residential complexes around Baitasi area have undergone a series of informal construction developments. The original enclosure form of a typical courtyard is in certain level lost. To revive the history of the courtyard lifestyle at the same time to renovate the possibility of living for the future hutong-ers, we propose to stage some cultural scenes by bringing the open courtyards back to the condense structure of existing buildings.
C2, the assigned housing block from the competition committee, is located on the east side straight from Baitasi, possesses an unique and very recognizable perimeter. In our plan of renovation, we designed three scenes as [Pay a Visit], [Take a Look], [Think for a Second] to activate the interaction between the exhibitor and visitors. The alternation between open courtyard and enclosed exhibition space is brought together by a continuous circulation route that also includes a path to the viewing rooftop.
